In the immediate aftermath of the collision, Mackenzie and Karl rush to Haz, who’s awake and stunned. In the midst of this, Andrew catches Wade … just as Haz suddenly collapses. As Karl starts resuscitation, Mackenzie is left watching in distress as her ex-boyfriend spirals towards death. When word gets back to Erinsborough, Byron, Holly, Sadie, and Susan arrive at the hospital and are confronted by the sight of Haz being urgently whisked away. Mackenzie is horrified when Dr. Bowman relays that Haz suffered a heart attack due to impact trauma and is now in a coma, from which he may not wake up.
At Haz’s bedside, Mackenzie has a meltdown, giving in to her deepest, darkest fear: she can’t lose another man she loves. With Mackenzie far from coping, Byron, Sadie, and Holly rally around their friend in her time of need. Baeling her regret at being so harsh towards Haz, Holly gives Wade a piece of her mind. Later, Dr. Bowman updates that the hopes of Haz coming out of a coma with a good outcome are much higher now. Despite this, Mackenzie struggles to take heart but later finds some determination as she declares to Haz she’s going to get him through this.
JJ is a bundle of nerves as he awaits the results of his diversion hearing, and his mums pull out all the stops to distract him with a game of basketball. Similarly anxious, Dex comes home ‘sick’ from school, wanting to be with the family as they wait. JJ is grateful for his brotherly support, as Dex admits he just wants their family to go back to how they were. Later, Cara and Remi are relieved to learn JJ has been granted diversion; however, they’re dismayed to find another ‘return to sender’ letter from Felix. As the mums voice that Felix is at least good at sticking to his word and rejecting JJ’s attempts to reach out, they’re unaware that Dex has heard all about their secret scheme. Despite the breakthrough with JJ’s behavior, the mums fail to get through to him when they bring up the letter and implore JJ to stop setting himself up for more hurt. As JJ slopes off, Dex is left troubled by the knowledge of the true reason behind Felix’s rejection. Later, JJ confides to Dex that it kills him that Felix won’t even open his letters and see that JJ only wants to get to know him. Moved by his brother’s anguish, Dex assures that JJ has the right to know his father and proceeds to drop a bomb. Armed with the truth, JJ blasts Remi and Cara for their lies and actions. He will never forgive them.
