In a whirlwind of drama, jealousy, and unexpected friendships, Cassie’s storyline on Coronation Street takes surprising turns. Actress Claire Sweeney reveals the depths of Cassie’s emotions and her evolving dynamics with key characters.
Cassie’s involvement in the deep fake video scandal stems from personal disappointment. “She feels disappointed with her personal life. That’s the reason for her being mean to Abby, it’s just jealousy, a single white female,” explains Claire Sweeney. Despite not being genuinely interested in Kevin, Cassie craves the security of being loved and thrives on drama. “She did possibly think there was something going on between Abi and Dean, and she stuck her oar in, leading to her losing her job.”
Without her job, Cassie finds herself in a precarious position. “She’s in no man’s land, her mother doesn’t really want her at the Dobbs. For someone with an addiction, having nothing to do is the worst place to be,” Sweeney shares. Cassie’s attempt to get a job at Streetcars is met with dismissal, adding to her woes. “Steve flirted with her at the speed dating night, then called her trouble and refused to hire her.”
Cassie’s next opportunity arises unexpectedly in the Rovers. Overhearing a conversation about Ken Barlow needing a carer, she seizes the chance. Despite not being a qualified carer, she convinces Ken’s family to let her take on the role. “Ken believes she’s had all the checks, but they let him believe that without confirming,” Sweeney reveals.
Initially resistant, Ken softens towards Cassie after a heartfelt conversation. “She tells him it’s a kindness to let someone help him because it makes them feel good. Once Ken realises she never claimed to be a qualified carer, he’s more open to the idea,” says Sweeney. This honest approach leads to a blossoming friendship, with Ken and Cassie enjoying each other’s company over lunch and card games. “She’s put a little spring in his step, and she feels useful and appreciated.”
Despite Cassie’s past actions, her intentions with Ken are genuine. As for Steve, there’s undeniable chemistry. “Simon and I were talking about it, and it’s like young kids in the playground, classic rom-com stuff,” Sweeney comments. Viewers can look forward to seeing this playful dynamic develop further.
Transitioning from the Dobbs to the Barlows was a nerve-wracking experience for Sweeney. “I was very comfortable with Maureen, Alan, and Jennie. Suddenly, I was with legendary actors like Rita and Ken. I had to stop and appreciate that moment,” she recalls. Working with Bill Roache, who plays Ken, has been a particular highlight. “He has this shine in his eyes, never drops a line, and is incredibly calm and brilliant. I feel so honoured to have this storyline with him.”
As Cassie’s journey continues, viewers can expect more drama, heartwarming moments, and perhaps a budding romance.
