Danny Dyer has revealed that he loved playing the role of Lee in comedy series Mr Bigstuff, describing the character as someone who “doesn’t conform to the way society – especially British society – we’re a bit too polite”.

In an interview, Dyer shared how much he enjoyed the opportunity to delve into comedy, a genre he hasn’t explored extensively in the past. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with Ryan Sampson, the show’s creator, who wrote the role specifically for him. Dyer praised Sampson’s talent and ability to establish genuine relationships within the show’s world.

“I was fascinated by how f***ing brilliant he is and how he manages to, sort of, slip under the radar as an actor, which I know that he loves, but the fact he is such a talented writer and he’s got these relationships locked down within this show,” Danny explained.

Danny also spoke about the show’s exploration of masculinity, a theme that resonated with him personally. He acknowledged the existence of toxic masculinity but emphasized the importance of recognizing the positive aspects of masculinity as well.

“Masculinity is an archetype, isn’t it, of what men are and what men bring to the table. I think masculinity can be quite a beautiful thing if it – it’s all about intent for me,” Dyer stated.

Danny expressed excitement about the show’s potential and pride in his performance. He also shared his fondness for working with co-star Harriet Webb, who plays Kirsty, describing her as “so funny, lovely, natural, a good person to be around.”

Reflecting on his favourite scene to film, Dyer revealed:

“When I read this big elaborate f***ing spoon playing thing, I was like, how are we going to do this?! But I think that [scene] for me, after me and Ryan put the work in…That might be my favourite scene because I had a lot of fear round it. Then I watched it and thought, it works, I believe that these two were doing this at talent shows in 1994.”
