Anne-Marie Duff returns to our screens as Dr. Susannah Newman in the second series of “Suspect,” stepping into the spotlight to uncover the truth behind her daughter Christina’s mysterious death.

Duff explains, “In the first series, the story is carried by Danny Frater (James Nesbitt), who investigates his daughter’s suspicious death. Susannah, Christina’s mother and Danny’s ex-wife, takes the reins in the second series. She’s a psychotherapist specializing in hypnotherapy, not a police officer, and she’s sensitive, intelligent, and swollen with grief.”

At the start of the new series, Duff’s character faces a shocking revelation. “In episode one, Susannah comes face-to-face with someone who confesses, under hypnosis, to multiple murders. This catalyst launches her into a very difficult journey, not a procedural investigation, but a personal one,” Duff shares.

Working with director Carolina Giammetta was a highlight for Anne-Marie. “We had a great time working together. She’s such a generous soul, and the way she interacts with actors is just gorgeous. The crew was phenomenal. We were very much in sync, and that’s such a gift!”

The unique filming process also added to the series’ dynamic feel. “Every week felt like a brand new project, with each location spectacularly different and a new cast. From the moment Susannah makes her discovery in episode one, it felt like a starting gun had fired,” Anne-Marie describes.

The show’s format, featuring intense two-hander episodes, offered Anne-Marie a unique acting challenge. “It’s blissful and rare on a TV or film set to see two actors really just playing with each other for a solid half-hour. The pedigree of actors that jumped on board was so exciting and inspiring,” Anne-Marie enthuses. “I felt like I had to raise the bar each time, working with talents like Eddie Marsan, Gina McKee, and Tamsin Greig.”

As for what audiences can expect from the second series, “It’s definitely a continuation from series one, but with a different energy and flavor. It’s someone outside of the legal system trying to uncover a crime, with a real female energy as it’s about a mother revealing the truth. It’s thrilling but also profoundly moving and fascinating.”

“Suspect” series 2 promises to be an emotional and riveting journey, as Dr. Susannah Newman delves deeper into the mystery of her daughter’s death, uncovering startling truths along the way.
