In an emotional storyline that has captivated Coronation Street viewers, Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) plans a special day out for his partner, Paul Foreman (Peter Ash), who is battling late-stage Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

Paul’s condition has deteriorated to the point where he can no longer use the stairlift in their first-floor flat, confining him indoors until they can find a more suitable ground-floor apartment. Faced with this grim reality, Billy decides to give Paul one last adventure before he’s stuck inside indefinitely.

“Billy’s idea comes after David suggests that the occupational therapist’s advice isn’t the law,” explains Daniel Brocklebank. “He decides to surprise Paul with a day trip so he can enjoy one last adventure.”

Despite the toll of being a carer, Billy is determined to keep spirits high. “Billy is always trying to keep Paul upbeat because there’s always this worry that Paul might decide he’s had enough,” Daniel shares. “He’s heartbroken, but he’s doing his best to make things cheerful.”

Their relationship has faced significant strain due to Paul’s illness, with trust issues arising when Paul thought Billy was trying to control his life. “Billy is a bit of a control freak, and Paul had initially assumed Billy went behind his back to the doctor. Although hurt, Billy understands why Paul thought that way,” Daniel says. “With their time being so precious, Billy quickly moves past any disagreements.”

Billy’s meticulously planned day starts with a sentimental visit to the church where they married, followed by a gathering at the Rovers with Paul’s friends. Paul, unable to drink due to his feeding tube, gets a special treat thanks to David’s inventive beer bubbles, allowing him to taste beer again. “The day is filled with little joys and meaningful moments,” Daniel reveals. “Billy realizes it’s the small things that matter most.”

The shadow of Paul’s potential decision to end his life looms over Billy. “Initially, it went against everything Billy stands for, but he understands Paul’s wishes,” Daniel confides. “Billy’s made peace with it, knowing he must ensure Paul’s decision is the right one when the time comes.”

Filming this poignant storyline has been deeply personal for Daniel, who has experienced a similar situation with his own family. “It’s been one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to play,” he admits. “Seeing Pete in that condition is so emotional. I’ve burst into tears on set multiple times.”

To cope with the emotional toll, Daniel turns to his dogs, gardening, and his camper van. “Grounding myself in nature is very recharging,” he says. “And wine helps, haha.”

As the storyline nears its end, the cast feels the impending loss of Peter Ash deeply. “We’re all very emotional. Losing Pete from the cast will be strange, but we’ve created lasting awareness and potentially funds for the MND community,” Daniel notes. “Pete’s now a patron of an MND charity, and he’ll continue to support the MND Association long after we finish this storyline.”

This powerful narrative not only highlights the struggles of living with MND but also showcases the strength of love and the importance of making every moment count.
