Hollyoaks’ Alex Fletcher (Diane Hutchinson) opens up about the emotional turmoil her character is facing as her family navigates a “transitional period.”
With her son Ro’s transition at the forefront of the drama, Diane’s struggles with alcohol and the strain it’s putting on her relationship with husband Tony (Nick Pickard) have become a major storyline.
Despite the challenges, Fletcher believes the Hutchinson family is stronger than it seems. “I think they’re just growing apart a little bit, but we will have to wait and see where they go from here,” she says.
Diane’s reliance on alcohol to cope with her anxieties about Ro’s future has led to several emotional scenes, including a disastrous surprise party where her drinking problem is exposed. “She’s obviously struggling with Ro’s transition and sadly she turns to alcohol to self-medicate and numb the pain,” Fletcher explains.

The storyline has also explored the complexities of parenting a trans child, with Diane admitting to feeling “a little bit left in the dark.” Fletcher praises the authenticity brought to the role by Ava Webster, who plays Ro, and the guidance provided by Iz Hesketh, who plays Kitty, a key support figure for Ro.
When asked about her hopes for Diane’s future, Fletcher reveals her desire for a stronger relationship between Diane and Ro, as well as some happiness and stability for her character. “I’d like to see Diane happy – I’m looking forward to her having a bit of fun and seeing her comfortable rather than being anxious the whole time.”
Fletcher also shares her fondness for former co-star Lauren McQueen, expressing her desire for McQueen’s character to return to Hollyoaks.
