In an interview with Inside Soap Magazine, Emmerdale star Charlotte Bellamy opened up about the explosive end of Laurel and Jai’s relationship. Bellamy, who portrays Laurel, revealed, “It’s inevitable that if a couple is too happy they won’t last, as that can be quite boring in a soap! I have to say I wasn’t surprised.”

Laurel’s decision to end things came swiftly after a series of revelations. “Her heart attack made her recalibrate her life and see things for what they are,” Charlotte explained. Discovering Jai’s deceit with Amit and the business shares was the breaking point. “She’s seen her husband for what he is. Laurel has a second chance at life; does she really want to be with a man like that?”

Jai, portrayed by Chris Bisson, isn’t handling the breakup well. “There’s an arrogance about Jai and he can’t believe Laurel has called the shots and ended it,” Charlotte said. “His big Sharma ego has been crushed, which is extremely disarming for him. That’s why the split starts to get really nasty.”

The impact on their children has been significant, particularly for Arthur, who is now 17 and protective of his family. Despite the upheaval, Charlotte noted, “Kids are so resilient, aren’t they? As long as they have their anchor, which in this case is Laurel, they move on quite quickly.”

Reflecting on Laurel’s past, Charlotte highlighted the influence of her late husband, Ashley. “She thinks about the goodness of Ashley, and how no one will ever compare to him. He was sort of saintly, whereas Jai is a rotter!”

The final straw came when Pollard revealed Jai’s betrayal regarding the HOP shares. “That gives Laurel the last piece of the jigsaw so she realises Jai basically stole the shares in HOP from his own brother. It’s the final nail in the coffin.”

Rishi’s memorial this week will only widen the rift between Laurel and Jai. Charlotte confirmed, “I don’t think there’s any way back for them as a couple now, sadly.”

As for Laurel’s future, Charlotte hinted at new beginnings. “She represents a lot of women in their early 50s who are on their own and raising kids. I’m sure she’ll have some dalliances, and maybe even try online dating, but as for another long-term relationship I’m not sure. Going on the journey with her now she’s single might be nice to see.”

Emmerdale continues on ITV1 at 7.30pm
