Hapless Malcolm to the Rescue in BBC Three’s New Comedy “Daddy Issues”
Gemma (Aimee Lou Wood), a carefree 24-year-old, finds herself pregnant after a one-night stand. With no other options, she turns to her clueless father, Malcolm (David Morrissey), for support in BBC Three’s new comedy series, “Daddy Issues,” premiering at 9pm on Thursday, 15th August 2024.
Malcolm, recently divorced and abandoned by his ex-wife who took off to ‘Eat Pray Love’ around the globe, can’t even manage basic household chores. Living in squalor with his equally hopeless friend Derek (David Fynn), Malcolm is far from the ideal caretaker. But when Gemma’s flatmate moves out, she invites her father to move in with her, hoping they can muddle through together.
“Malcolm is a bit of a man-child,” David Morrissey explains. “He’s been infantilized all his life and doesn’t know how to look after himself. He’s in crisis when Gemma comes to him for help.”
Their relationship is a mix of love and desperation. “They love each other, but whether they’re good for each other is debatable,” David continues. “They both need each other but aren’t sure the other can handle the weight.”
Morrissey was drawn to the role for its comedic potential. “I loved the script and Aimee Lou Wood. I’ve admired her for a while. I wanted something different from the heavy dramas I usually do, and this was perfect.”

Working with Wood has been a highlight for Morrissey. “She’s SO funny. One of our biggest problems is making each other laugh on set. We have a great ease with each other, which is essential for the awkward situations we get into.”
The show also explores Malcolm’s friendship with Derek, another key relationship. “David Fynn is great. Derek is Malcolm’s friend, or is he? He’s an angry but pathetic man, and that dynamic is a good sounding board for Malcolm,” Morrissey notes.

“Daddy Issues” is a heartwarming story of family, friendship, and facing parenthood at any stage of life. Tune in for the premiere on BBC Three to join Malcolm and Gemma on their chaotic journey.
