“I was overwhelmed with messages. People saying they didn’t know this was a thing before Frankie” – Actress Isabelle Smith
Frankie Osborne (Isabelle Smith) has been at the centre of a harrowing storyline in Hollyoaks, highlighting the often-unheard issue of sibling sexual abuse (SSA). Isabelle spoke about the emotional journey of playing Frankie, the impact it’s had on viewers, and the importance of raising awareness.

“It’s been tough for everyone,” says Isabelle. “Frankie feels so isolated. Darren’s relationship with JJ seems perfect, which makes it even harder. She desperately wants their support but lashes out instead.”
Despite the abuse, Frankie still harbors feelings for JJ. “It’s common,” explains Isabelle. “There’s love and fear. She drowns her pain, but JJ keeps promising to stop. It’s a vicious cycle.”
Frankie’s bond with Oscar strengthens through sign language, a source of comfort. “JJ is jealous,” says Isabelle. “He wants her all to himself. Deep down, Frankie might hope Oscar tells someone, but she’s too scared to speak up herself.”
The violence at the football ground becomes a pivotal moment. “She sees no escape,” says Isabelle. “It’s the push she needs to finally tell Darren.”
“Darren’s love creates a safe space,” explains Isabelle. “Finally, she breaks down and reveals the abuse. The fear of being called a liar vanishes, and she can start to heal.”
Despite Darren’s support, Frankie faces further heartbreak when her mum, Suzanne, sides with JJ. “It’s her worst fear,” says Isabelle. “But it strengthens her bond with Darren.”
“There are twists and turns ahead,” teases Isabelle. “Frankie finds comfort in Lucas and rebuilds relationships. Reliving the abuse will be tough, but she’s not alone anymore.”
An Overwhelming Response
“The messages have been incredible,” says Isabelle. “Survivors thanking us, others just learning about SSA. It’s overwhelming, but so rewarding to raise awareness.”
“Playing Frankie has been challenging but rewarding,” says Isabelle. “Research helps me understand her. Reading survivor statements is tough, but knowing I’m giving a voice to the voiceless keeps me going.”
“SSA is a taboo subject,” says Isabelle. “We need to talk about it. By showing Frankie’s story, we’re letting survivors know they’re not alone and encouraging others to listen.”
“We met with a charity to learn how to help,” says Isabelle. “They offer support to survivors and advice to parents. Hearing their stories was emotional, but their strength inspires me.”
“You are seen, you are heard,” concludes Isabelle. “This storyline is a start. We need to create a safe space for survivors to speak their truth.”
