Coronation Street’s Bethany Platt is set for a harrowing ordeal this autumn after a cosmetic procedure in Turkey takes a dangerous turn.

In a shocking twist, Bethany, portrayed by Lucy Fallon, decides to undergo liposuction while writing an advertorial for a cosmetic surgery company in Turkey. However, the operation goes disastrously wrong, leaving her in a critical condition after contracting sepsis and facing the reality of living with a permanent stoma.

Viewers will be gripped as the beloved character battles life-threatening complications from the botched procedure. The storyline echoes a worrying trend, as a recent study shows a staggering 94% rise in UK patients needing hospital treatment following cosmetic surgeries abroad, with Turkey accounting for the majority of these procedures. Increasing numbers of people are returning with serious complications, including wound healing problems and life-threatening sepsis.

Coronation Street has collaborated with Colostomy UK to ensure the storyline is portrayed accurately and sensitively, reflecting the experiences of over 200,000 people in the UK who live with a stoma. Giovanni Cinque from Colostomy UK expressed his excitement, stating, “We’re really excited that one of the UK’s most loved TV shows is going to feature a major character living with a stoma… We hope that Bethany’s journey will go a long way in helping to educate the audience and create a more Stoma Aware UK.”

The dramatic storyline kicks off when Bethany takes up the job in Turkey, arranged by Debbie Webster. The horror begins when her boyfriend Daniel receives a call from the Turkish hospital, revealing Bethany is in intensive care. In another cruel twist, Bethany never declared her surgery to her travel insurance, leaving her family scrambling to raise funds for her medical care and discharge.

Lucy Fallon shared her thoughts on this challenging storyline: “When I first heard about it, I was pleased that they have trusted me with it because it’s an important storyline… It does come with quite a lot of pressure and responsibility to get it right because this happens to real-life people. I really hope this storyline can make people rethink going abroad for cosmetic surgery.”

This gripping plot aims to shed light on the dangers of cosmetic surgery abroad and the challenges faced by those living with a stoma, promising to be one of the most intense storylines of the year.
