Hollyoaks is set to tackle the fourth most common cancer in the UK as the beloved character Mercedes McQueen faces a life-changing diagnosis. In a dramatic time-jump, viewers will catch up with the residents of Chester one year on, with Mercedes at the heart of a poignant storyline about bowel cancer.
In a storyline that defies age stereotypes, Hollyoaks will highlight how bowel cancer can affect younger people, not just those over 50. The show will portray Mercedes’ journey through diagnosis and treatment, shedding light on the physical and mental impact of the disease, as well as the crucial role of support networks.

Genevieve Edwards, Chief Executive at Bowel Cancer UK, praised the show for its brave portrayal. “Mercedes McQueen is one of the most recognized characters in the show, and her bowel cancer journey will raise vital awareness about early diagnosis and the realities of living with the disease in a powerful and accessible way,” she said. Edwards emphasized that early diagnosis is key, with research showing that more than 9 in 10 people survive when bowel cancer is detected at its earliest stage.
As part of the storyline, viewers will find Mercedes several months after her diagnosis, following surgery for a stoma and colostomy bag, and ongoing chemotherapy for a secondary tumor. Executive Producer Hannah Cheers highlighted the importance of Bowel Cancer UK’s advice in crafting the story. “We will see how that impacts her physically and emotionally, and the impact on her friends and family,” Cheers shared, adding that the storyline aims to increase awareness and encourage vigilance in spotting symptoms.
Jennifer Metcalfe, who plays Mercedes, brings a personal connection to the storyline. “This story is incredibly important to me. When I was aged 15, I lost my dad to bowel cancer, and it has impacted my life hugely,” she revealed. Metcalfe hopes that the storyline will spark conversations about health and encourage people to seek advice. “Mercedes deals with it in her own way, she’s never felt so vulnerable. If people are talking about that, then hopefully it becomes talking about their own health,” she added.
Hollyoaks’ portrayal of Mercedes’ journey aims to educate and inspire viewers to be aware of changes in their bodies and seek medical advice when needed. For more information about bowel cancer, symptoms, and support, viewers are encouraged to visit the Bowel Cancer UK website.
