Ross McLaren, a familiar face to fans of Doctors as Luca McIntyre since 2021, has opened up about his time on the show, sharing his favourite storylines, memories, and what he’ll miss most as the beloved BBC series prepares for its final episodes.

Reflecting on his favourite storyline, Ross points to the show’s HIV awareness plot as his standout experience. ‘I really enjoyed working on the HIV awareness storyline. It’s so important that people have accurate information about HIV, especially regarding diagnosis and the advances in modern medicine that have transformed life for those living with it,’ he shared. The role gave Ross not only a deeper understanding of the subject but also a sense of purpose. ‘I learned so much myself, and it felt rewarding to contribute to raising awareness,’ he said.

Recalling his very first day on set, Ross admits he was filled with nerves, but the experience left a lasting impression. ‘My favourite memory has to be my first day on set. I was so nervous, but walking into the iconic Mill and seeing the Doctors team in action was incredible,’ he remembered fondly. ‘The efficiency, warmth, and talent of everyone around me made it unforgettable.’

When asked what makes Doctors so special, Ross was quick to answer: ‘The people and the sense of community,’ he said. According to Ross, the show’s magic came from a mix of industry veterans and newcomers. ‘We got to work with a fantastic mix of talent from across the TV industry—whether it was someone’s first time on set or a returning familiar face. The team fostered such a welcoming atmosphere, which was all the more impressive given the demanding schedule we worked under.’

For Ross, Doctors provided a rare stability in an industry often marked by uncertainty. ‘The regularity of the work,’ he admitted, is what he’ll miss the most. ‘Acting is an incredibly rewarding field, but it’s also tough, with constant auditions and the unpredictability of it all. Being part of a long-running drama like Doctors offered a rare sense of stability, almost like a 9-to-5 in the acting world!’

While keeping the final episodes under wraps, Ross hinted at an exciting end to the show’s run. ‘I wish I could tell you more! Let’s just say we go out with a bang, and you absolutely don’t want to miss it.’So, what lies ahead for Ross? ‘Who knows? That’s the exciting (and sometimes daunting) part of an actor’s life!’ he laughed. But he has a creative outlet to keep him busy. ‘Thankfully, like a lot of actors, I have a side hustle. I run a photography business, YellowBellyPhoto, which helps fulfil my creative side and keeps me busy between acting gigs.’
