Cassie’s shocking secret is out – but can she claw her way back?

Coronation Street fans have been gripped by Cassie’s antics; the truth has finally caught up with her. Viewers have seen her secretly drugging Ken to keep him dependent on her, all while using his credit card for a few luxuries on the side. Now, actress Claire Sweeney has opened up about Cassie’s motivations, her downfall, and whether she can ever redeem herself.

Speaking about Cassie’s toxic hold over Ken, Claire said: ‘She doesn’t genuinely care for Ken. There’s almost a Pygmalion, My Fair Lady relationship with them. He teaches her things, takes her to the opera, and they actually laugh together. But keeping him a little bit sleepy means he needs her. At one point, he told her, “I don’t need you anymore,” and she went into survival mode.’

Cassie has been through her fair share of hardships, from a troubled past on the streets to a history of addiction, and Claire admits that her character’s actions stem from desperation. ‘She’s in love with Steve, she thrives on sparring with Tracy, and she adores Ken. She’s finally got a family, and she doesn’t want to lose it.’

But Cassie’s sticky fingers have caused just as much trouble as the drugging scandal, with her using Ken’s card to buy and resell items. Claire acknowledged this side of her character: ‘She can’t help herself. It’s a personality trait. A little ninja here and there – an air fryer, a juicer, a pair of hair straighteners. She was smart about it with Tracy, but it’s petty stealing. If she was doing it properly, she’d clear him out and up the dose on the medicine. She’s like a magpie!’

With her web of lies unravelled, Cassie finally confesses to everything, a moment Claire describes as a relief. ‘She couldn’t have carried on the way she was. There has to be a redemption arc. And Bill Roache in those scenes… wow. It’s an award-winning performance. There was a scene so powerful that the crew applauded him. It was an honour to work with him.’

Cassie’s fate hangs in the balance, but it’s Hope who convinces her to stay in Weatherfield rather than fleeing. ‘They see each other,’ Claire explained. ‘There’s a naughtiness in both of them. The scenes with Isabella Flanagan [who plays Hope] are brilliant. On paper, Cassie should be angry with her, but instead, there’s admiration – “That’s my girl. One to you, you got me.”‘

However, Tracy has other plans, as she attempts to push Cassie back into addiction. ‘There’s a moment where Cassie thinks, “I might as well.” But then she realises, if she does, Tracy wins. And she doesn’t want that. She wants to keep her dignity, stay in control.’

Despite everything, Ken chooses not to press charges, which Claire says moves Cassie deeply. ‘Good old Ken. He’s lived with an addict before. He remembers the good times and the kind things they did together.’

Yet Cassie’s biggest test comes when Evelyn returns. Claire teased: ‘Cassie expects a right rollicking. But instead, Evelyn stands up for her. Cassie can’t believe it. Even if Evelyn doesn’t believe a word she’s saying, she sees her daughter and defends her.’

With Cassie now homeless and friendless, can she rebuild her life? Claire certainly hopes so – especially when it comes to Steve. ‘I adore working with Simon Gregson. He makes me laugh. The scenes between Steve and Cassie are gold. The minute he walks in, she turns into a giggly teenager. It’s forbidden fruit – he shouldn’t be going near her, but he just can’t help himself. And it’s not just lust, it’s genuine fondness too.’

Looking ahead, Claire loves the complexity of her character. ‘She’s not one-dimensional. She’s funny, a bit evil, and vulnerable all at once. She’s an absolute joy to play.’

And with tensions between Cassie and Fiz on the rise, could we see more clashes ahead? ‘There’s a real Ab Fab dynamic,’ Claire said. ‘Fiz is the sensible one, Cassie’s completely off the rails, and Hope is right in the middle. It makes for great comedy.’

So, will Cassie find a way to stay in Weatherfield? And could she and Steve be the cobbles’ next big couple? Claire teased: ‘I think we are going to see more of them. And long may it last, because he is gorgeous!’
