EastEnders is joining forces with Comic Relief this Red Nose Day to produce a special short episode that aims to open up important conversations around mental health.
Airing exclusively as part of Comic Relief: Funny For Money on Friday 21st March, the five-minute special will focus on none other than Albert Square stalwart Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden), continuing his powerful mental health storyline which has seen the character grappling with depression and psychosis.
The episode follows Phil’s time in a mental health unit after he reached a breaking point during EastEnders’ landmark 40th anniversary episode, where viewers saw him attempt to take his own life. During his treatment, Phil forms an unlikely bond with fellow patient Andy (played by Jake Rory), who opens up about his past experiences living in a homeless youth hostel. As the two characters begin to share their stories, they soon discover striking similarities in their struggles.
Speaking about the special episode, EastEnders’ Executive Producer Chris Clenshaw said:
“We’re thrilled to be working alongside Comic Relief and Brandon Centre as we continue to explore the complex realities of Phil’s journey with mental health. Whilst seeking treatment, Phil and Andy quickly realise they have more in common than they first anticipated.”
EastEnders has worked closely with Comic Relief and the Brandon Centre, a charity funded by Comic Relief which offers vital mental health support to young people, to ensure the storyline is portrayed with authenticity and sensitivity.
