New four-part thriller starring Jason Watkins, Robson Green and Sunetra Sarker.
Former detective Huw (Watkins) settles into retirement alongside his wife Alice (Sarker) but never far from his mind is the case he failed to solve – The Ripton Stalker. And when new neighbour, Patrick (Green) moves in and utters the chilling phrase ‘catch you later’ – the sign off the stalker used to taunt Huw, he’s determined he’s finally got his man.
What follows is a high-stakes game of psychological chess between the neighbours as Huw risks everything to unearth the truth. But has he got the right man, or has his obsession pushed him to the brink?
Episode One
Haunted by memories of a failed arrest that allowed the Ripton Stalker to remain free, Detective Inspector Huw Miller says his goodbyes on his final day before retirement. DI Martin Flint and the other detectives barely take notice, only DS Jenny Atkins tries to give him some sort of sendoff.
Helped by his wife, Alice, Huw remains upbeat, throwing himself into retirement, playing golf with his neighbour Frank. But Huw’s mind remains busy, searching online about the Ripton Stalker. And when Huw discovers Frank dead in the bath, this suburban street is sent into disarray.
Adamant that it’s not suicide, Huw asks Jenny for help. Something is wrong. Moving into Frank’s old house is the handsome and enigmatic Patrick Harbottle who introduces himself to the neighbours, Liz, Steve and Paul. As the men go down the pub, Huw and Patrick seem to hit it off. But when Patrick says the three words ‘catch you later’, a phrase that the Ripton Stalker always signed off with in his letters, Huw is sent spiraling. Is Patrick the Ripton Stalker?
Huw’s suspicion mounts as he pleads with Jenny to see Frank’s post-mortem report. Huw tries to get to know Patrick and soon feels on edge. Returning home, Huw’s shocked to find Patrick in his home with Alice. They’re invited to a house-warming party. That night, Huw takes the opportunity to snoop around. Later, Huw still can’t shake his feelings. He looks out the window and sees Patrick, staring back…
Episode Two
Huw’s promise to Alice to forget about Patrick and the Ripton Stalker comes under strain as his obsession grows. After bumping into Patrick at Tina’s house under suspicious circumstances, Huw visits Patrick’s Repair Shop. He sees a collection of Polaroids behind the desk. Patrick shows Huw his latest project, a doll’s house with a ballerina statue but Patrick responds coldly when Huw asks to take a photo.
Poring over the Ripton Stalker case, Huw stops at Ruth, the only person who got away alive, and who owned the exact same ballerina statue, but she got rid of the ballerina statue a long time ago.
Despite Jenny’s pleas to drop it, Huw sneaks into Patrick’s house. But when Patrick returns home, Huw hides before returning to find Patrick in his kitchen. They agree to go to the pub as Huw tries to suss out Patrick.
Surprised to see his daughter Margot back, Huw tries to keep the peace while Jenny’s alarmed to see Ruth turn up at the police station. After Jenny arrives to tell Huw to stay away from Ruth, Alice and Margot are livid. Huw was lying to them. He abruptly leaves to apologise to Ruth, but she doesn’t answer the door.
Arriving home, Huw’s met by Alice closing the door. He can’t stay here. Drunk, Huw staggers to Patrick’s house.
Episode Three
Waking with a jolt at Patrick’s house, Huw stirs, adamant that he heard Patrick admit to being the Ripton Stalker. But Patrick bluffs, later boasting to Steve about Huw’s drunken antics.
Still kicked out of the house, Huw’s on a mission for help, first trying Ruth, but she doesn’t answer, and then visiting Declan Reid, the man he erroneously named as the Ripton Stalker. But after Declan refuses, Huw calls Ruth to apologise, not realising that Jenny and Martin have just found Ruth dead.
Patrick charms his way into chatting with Alice and Margot while Huw’s desperation sets in. He questions Declan again about his connection to the Ripton Stalker. But Huw hits further dead ends as Declan kicks him out.
Huw pleads with Alice, who offers an ultimatum – prove Patrick’s the Ripton Stalker or she’s leaving him. With the street growing paranoid, Huw finds an ally in Paul who also doesn’t buy Patrick’s act. Huw shows Paul the case files on the flash drive. They just need to find a link.
And as Jenny gets a new lead, Huw can’t help but gloat to Patrick. He’s got him.
Episode Four
Under arrest, Huw’s faced with tough evidence: the cufflinks given to him by Jenny found at Ruth’s flat, fingerprints on the case at Patrick’s house, and the knife that killed Paul from his house. Huw’s led away in cuffs as Patrick burns evidence, enjoying watching the Polaroid burn.
While the street has seemingly turned on Huw, Alice and Margot stand by him. They believe him. As Alice goes on the warpath asking questions, she comes face to face with Patrick.
Returning from Ruth’s funeral, Huw finds a Polaroid on the table. Patrick was here. It’s time. Sending Alice and Margot away for their own safety, Huw vows to confront Patrick on his own.
