Emmerdale air these scenes from Monday 8 September on ITV1

Aaron tries to make his escape from John. Robert finally arrives at the cottage and accuses his brother of committing murder but John’s defiance is unbreakable. When the confrontation turns physical, Robert’s left lifeless on the ground.

Checking that Robert’s still breathing, John’s relieved not to have killed again, but it’s short-lived as he spies Aaron making an escape.

Aaron’s distressed as he searches for the hatch in the woods he knows is connected to Mack’s disappearance. Meanwhile, John tears through the woods, frantically, to locate his runaway husband. With his search for Mack increasingly hopeless, Aaron is stopped in his tracks by a massive gorge.

Turning around, he’s shocked to be face to face with John. As John tries to improvise a cover story, Aaron no longer believes a word from his lips.

All at once Aaron can see how unbalanced John really is. He urges John to lead him to Mack but just as John is on the verge of calling the police to confess, Robert appears. His sense of betrayal is instantaneous as he accuses Aaron of orchestrating the reunion.

As things escalate, John calls the police to frame Robert before jumping into the gorge with his arms around Aaron….
