Coronation Street’s Head of Design reveals the thrill of bringing the cobbles to life – and how she balances a demanding career with motherhood
“There’s no such thing as a standard day!” says Coronation Street’s Head of Design, Rosie Mullins-Hoyle, with infectious enthusiasm. One minute she could be deciphering scripts and brainstorming future storylines, the next wielding a technical drawing pen for the latest set. Rosie’s role is to oversee the show’s entire visual aesthetic, managing a team of up to 100 to bring the producer’s vision to life.
Her passion for design ignited on stage. Rosie recalls, “I couldn’t get into character unless the set and props were perfect.” This early love for detail propelled her towards a career in television design. Starting in Coronation Street’s Art Department, she worked her way up, crediting her team for their invaluable support. Rosie emphasizes the importance of on-set experience: “There’s a willingness to get stuck in, to help others, and to learn from a talented team.”
Now, after nearly two decades at Corrie, Rosie still finds the work exhilarating. “The variety is incredible,” she beams, “from explosions and tram crashes to high-end hotels and family homes.” But it’s the people that truly keep her there. Rosie praises the team’s collaborative spirit: “We brainstorm, listen, and create fantastic solutions – anything from a shopping centre to a hoarder’s house!”
As the first female Head of Design at Coronation Street, Rosie is a role model for aspiring creatives. “It’s important to show women they can achieve a career and be a mum,” she declares. Balancing work and family life can be challenging, but with a supportive network, Rosie makes it work. “If I can inspire just one person,” she concludes, “that’s fantastic.” And with her dedication and passion, she’s sure to inspire many more.

Coronation Street continues at 8pm tomorrow on ITV1
