The BBC has revealed an exclusive first-look at Charlie Fairhead (Derek Thompson) and Ethan Hardy’s (George Rainsford) return to BAFTA-winning drama Casualty for the 40th anniversary special double-bill, airing on Saturday 5th September 2026 on BBC iPlayer and BBC One.
The gripping, anniversary event centres on a high-stakes major incident that throws Holby into chaos.

Flynn and Stevie are pushed to their absolute limits when their ambulance isn’t just caught in an accident, but their very survival depends on each other.
Olly Rix who plays Flynn Byron in the series revealed ‘Flynn and Stevie’s relationship is special, and one of the joys of playing it has been watching the characters realise that long after everyone else. Other characters, and even the audience, saw it long before Flynn or Stevie did.
There’s an ease between them that means sometimes they take one another for granted, but then they’re thrust into the situation of this 40th episode, where there’s a chance they might lose one half of this equation, and it penetrates right to the core of them.’
Outside the Emergency Department, neighbouring hospital St James has blown up. The ensuing chaos quickly puts the Holby City staff on high alert, and leaves Dylan facing armed officers in the events that follow.
The anniversary episodes celebrate 40 years of Casualty while signalling an exciting new chapter, demonstrating the ambition, storytelling and emotional impact at the heart of the series.
