As soap families go, you don’t get much bigger than the Dingles — quite literally, considering there’s not a corner of Emmerdale village you won’t find one of the sprawling brood. And after 24 years on the show, Emma Atkins is proud to be an elder stateswoman of the legendary family.

“It feels pretty special to be a Dingle,” Emma revealed to Inside Soap.. “When I was told I was going to play Charity, it was one of the best things I will ever remember. Even if I’d left years ago, I just think I will forever be a Dingle. It’s a real honour.”

Charity’s tumultuous journey began with her involvement with Chris Tate, leading to a memorable and twisted storyline. “I could never forget the storyline where Chris framed Charity for his murder,” Emma recalls. “I vividly remember being in a boilersuit, thinking, ‘This is real. I’m in Emmerdale being framed for murder!’”

Charity’s morally dubious actions have left a lasting impression, particularly the time she made a pact with Zoe Tate to sell her child for freedom. “Who sells their own child? I really can’t defend her on that one!”

Charity’s numerous weddings have also been a highlight. “Charity’s had so many weddings, she’s the Liz Taylor of soap!” Emma laughs. “I loved the wedding with Cain that didn’t happen. It was snowing, I had this ridiculous pink dress on, but it was so emotional when she said she didn’t want to go through with it as it may ruin what they have.”

Emma also reminisces about the dramatic scenes with Patsy Kensit’s character, Sadie King. “I really enjoyed working with Patsy Kensit. There’s a moment when Sadie pushes Charity down the stairs and she ends up in a neck brace. I loved that.”

Over the years, Emma has seen many co-stars come and go, and has mourned the loss of beloved colleagues, including Steve Halliwell, who played Zak Dingle. “We recently celebrated Steve’s life with his daughter and granddaughter — there was a great turnout.”

One co-star who left a significant impact on Emma was Leah Bracknell, who played Zoe Tate. “One of my favourite human beings to work with was Leah Bracknell. We had some incredibly funny, intense scenes together but she took all the worry away. I miss her so much.”
