As Beth Cordingly, who plays Ruby, joins Inside Soap Magazine for a chat, she reveals this softening came as a bit of a disappointment to some Ruby fans. However, she wasn’t worried about letting her audience down – because she knew Ruby’s baddest deeds were still to come…

“I really liked Ruby being naughty, I hope she’s not going to stop!” shared fans on social media. And Beth assures us that Ruby’s wicked ways are far from over. Ruby’s involvement in the hit-and-run with Ethan was just the beginning, and her latest twist with Rose is set to cause even more havoc. Ruby’s car accident with Ethan was a heat-of-the-moment act driven by anger over her son Nicky’s coma. But her ongoing plot against Kim at Home Farm is a calculated move to support her husband, Caleb, and settle her own scores.

“Ultimately, she’s doing it for Caleb,” Beth explains. “She wants to make him happy, even if she does whinge about village life. Her next step comes from Caleb’s beef with Kim – she wants to punish her. Ruby’s pride is also at stake after past betrayals with Kim.”

The brewing conflict with Kim could lead to a dramatic showdown. “Ruby is passionate and impulsive, whereas Kim’s far cooler,” Beth says. “But is Ruby up to taking on Kim? Well, we’ll see…”

Beth relishes Ruby’s confrontations with various cast members, especially enjoying her dynamic with Christine Tremarco (Rose) and Natalie J Robb (Moira). “Christine is such a great actress, and our scenes are like a tennis match,” she shares. “I also loved my stuff with Natalie; we had great chemistry.”

The tension mounts as Ruby’s scheme against Kim remains a secret from Caleb. “If it backfires, she’s going to have to pick up the pieces herself,” Beth muses. “The fire and passion in their relationship means there’s always a tension that could spill over. The writers do like to throw a grenade in there, and this story could be one of them!”

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1.
