EastEnders is set to explore a hard-hitting storyline this summer, featuring child-to-parent abuse between Tommy Moon (Sonny Kendall) and his mother, Kat Mitchell (Jessie Wallace).

Kat Slater, known for her fiery temper, faces a new challenge as her son Tommy’s behavior becomes increasingly hostile. In tonight’s episode, Kat endured Tommy’s anger after his failed attempt to reunite her with Phil Mitchell.

The storyline delves into Tommy’s attempts to control and dominate Kat, highlighting the impact on their relationship and the broader Slater-Moon family. EastEnders is collaborating with Family Based Solutions, PEGS, and NSPCC to ensure the storyline is depicted with accuracy and sensitivity.

Executive Producer Chris Clenshaw commented:

“Kat is well-known in Albert Square for her no-nonsense attitude and fiery temper, but this storyline will explore how Tommy manipulates Kat’s unequivocal love for her son to exert his anger and elicit control. Jessie [Wallace] and Sonny’s [Kendall] performances have thoughtfully portrayed the complex realities of child to parent abuse with compassion and understanding.”

Jason Phasouliotis, Secondary Age Lead Practitioner at Family Based Solutions, emphasized:

“We’re proud to be working alongside EastEnders on this storyline to bring to light a critical and often overlooked issue: child-to-parent abuse (CPA). EastEnders has shown a deep commitment to portray this sensitive topic with the seriousness it deserves.”

Michelle John, Director at PEGS, added:

“By EastEnders showing the reality of child to parent abuse, we hope it will encourage important discussions and raise awareness. We were privileged to provide insight, guidance, and support for the team to ensure the storyline is real but respectful.”
