In this week’s explosive episodes of Coronation Street, Bethany Platt’s decision to undergo cosmetic surgery abroad leads to devastating consequences. Lucy Fallon, who plays Bethany, has revealed her character’s life will be changed forever after complications from an unplanned liposuction procedure result in her needing a stoma bag for life.
Speaking to media, Lucy shared her initial reaction to the dramatic storyline. “When I first heard about it, I was pleased they trusted me with this, because it’s such an important issue. It’s really hard-hitting, which is exciting as an actor, but there’s a lot of pressure too, because it’s a reality for many people,” she said.

Bethany’s story takes a tragic turn when her decision to undergo liposuction—without declaring it on her insurance—leaves her family scrambling to pay her medical bills. “She didn’t plan on getting the surgery, it was a spur-of-the-moment decision. I think she may have been talked into it when she got there, and she’s going to regret it forever,” Fallon explained.
The pressure on Bethany’s self-esteem has been building for a while, Lucy admitted. “Her confidence has been really low ever since everything that happened with Nathan and the grooming storyline. She’s constantly comparing herself to Daisy, and feeling like Daniel might want to be with her instead. It’s all tied to her insecurities.”
In upcoming scenes, Bethany’s mum, Sarah, will deliver the devastating news that not only is her daughter’s insurance void, but she will have to live with a stoma bag permanently. “Bethany takes it really badly. She didn’t want the surgery in the first place, and now she feels like she’s ruined her life and everyone else’s around her. She’s absolutely horrified and guilt-ridden,” Lucy revealed.
This tragic turn will put immense strain on Bethany’s relationship with Daniel Osbourne. “She’s embarrassed, and being fitted with a stoma has made her feel even more insecure than before. Daniel’s supportive, but I think Bethany will push him away. She’s ashamed and doesn’t want anyone to know.”

When asked if she knew much about stomas before filming, Fallon admitted, “I knew a little because I’d seen more people talk about it on TV and social media, but I’ve learned so much more now. We’ve worked closely with Colostomy UK, and they’ve been amazing.”
Despite the difficult months ahead, Lucy hinted there’s hope for Bethany’s future. “It’s going to be a big challenge for her, especially coming to terms with the fact that this is something she’s done to herself. But over time, I think she’ll realise that having a stoma hasn’t changed her life as much as she feared. It’ll take some setbacks, but she’ll get there.”
