Next week, Coronation Street fans will be in for a shock as a familiar face returns to Weatherfield. Jesse Chadwick, played by comedian and actor John Thomson, is back on the cobbles – but it’s not his ex, Eileen Grimshaw, he’s here to see. Instead, his attention is on none other than Eileen’s nemesis, Gail Rodwell!
Eileen, who has just returned from Thailand, is left speechless when she bumps into Jesse. But she’s even more stunned to learn that he’s come to check on Gail, after the pair met while travelling a few years ago. Jesse, it turns out, has been in touch with Gail ever since, and after hearing about Bethany Platt’s cosmetic surgery nightmare in Turkey, he decided to make a surprise visit.
But as always in Weatherfield, nothing is ever straightforward. Could there be more to Jesse’s sudden reappearance? Given his murky history with Eileen – including a failed romance and some very questionable behaviour – Gail’s family are naturally suspicious. With David and Sarah Platt doubting his motives and Shona and Nick trying to stay open-minded, it looks like there’s a lot more drama in store.
In a chat with Corrie, John Thomson teased what fans can expect from Jesse’s return: “It’s not about rekindling anything with Eileen – that’s the last thing on his mind. Jesse’s changed. He’s remorseful for his past actions, especially the way things ended with Eileen. But his connection with Gail is real, and he’s genuinely concerned about her.”
Thomson, who last appeared on the soap in 2010, shared his excitement about reprising the role. “I was really happy to get the call. It felt like catching up with an old friend. Jesse’s changed quite a bit – no more children’s entertainer act with the talking parrot! He’s matured, though there’s still some comedy to be had.”
As for how the Platts will react to Jesse’s sudden involvement in Gail’s life, Thomson revealed: “Two of them are on his side, and two absolutely are not. David and Sarah have their doubts, especially considering Gail’s track record with men. It’s going to be a tough task for Jesse to prove himself.”
Fans will have to wait and see how the dynamic plays out, and whether Eileen’s current partner, George Shuttleworth, will have anything to say about her ex being back in town. One thing’s for sure: with Jesse on the scene, life in Weatherfield is about to get even more chaotic!
