This Christmas, heartbreak hits Albert Square as Jean faces a devastating blow, becoming the victim of a sophisticated pension scam.

In a shocking twist, viewers will see Jean’s world crumble when she discovers the ‘financial advisors’ she trusted have stolen her entire pension savings. Tonight’s episode reveals the truth about the criminals who tricked her, leaving Jean distraught and battling the emotional fallout.

Speaking about the storyline, Executive Producer Chris Clenshaw said: ‘Jean’s story will highlight the extreme strategies scammers use to gain a victim’s trust to convince them into parting with serious sums of money. Not only will Jean have to cope with losing her pension money, but she’ll also have to deal with a range of difficult emotions as she tells her family and friends what’s happened.’

EastEnders has worked closely with experts, including Nick from the BBC’s Scam Safe initiative, to ensure authenticity. Nick shared: ‘Scams are one of the greatest challenges of modern times. It’s not just the financial loss but also the emotional and psychological toll on victims. EastEnders is leading the way by bringing this issue to the forefront.’

The storyline also highlights alarming real-world statistics. Gaucho from The Pensions Regulator revealed: ‘More than £17 million was reported lost to pension fraud in 2023, with the average victim losing over £47,000. Jean’s story shows how ruthlessly scammers exploit the vulnerable. We urge everyone to watch for warning signs, like high-pressure tactics and promises that seem too good to be true.’

James from Stop Scams UK added: ‘By bringing these issues to life during BBC Scam Safe Week, EastEnders is playing a crucial role in raising awareness and empowering viewers to stay vigilant.’

EastEnders airs on BBC One at 7.30pm every Monday – Thursday
