Coronation Street Monday, Wednesday and Friday on ITV1 at 8pm
It’s been a harrowing 12 months for Coronation Street’s Lauren, and Cait Fitton has opened up about the challenges of playing the troubled character, including her intense storyline with Joel and what’s in store.
‘It’s been exhausting but rewarding,’ says Cait, reflecting on Lauren’s journey. ‘I did a lot of research on grooming and worked with charities to ensure I portrayed the story right. Lauren’s been through so much—she’s a completely different person now. She’s killed someone, and that’s going to stay with her. It’s eye-opening for me and hopefully for the audience too.’

Lauren’s feelings about Joel are complex. ‘She hates him. There might’ve been guilt at the start, but not for him—for Frankie, because she’s taken away part of his life. Even though Joel wouldn’t have been involved, she still feels conflicted. But after everything Joel’s done, Lauren feels she didn’t get the justice she wanted. He hurt her and everyone she loves.’
Despite Lauren’s growth, she still leans on Max. ‘They’ve been through so much together. Max is the only person who’s always respected and loved her. But their dreams of a life together are shattered when Max hands himself in for a murder he didn’t commit. Watching it, I was shouting, “Why?”’
Now in jail after being reported by David, Lauren’s relationships with the Platts are strained. ‘She understands deep down, but she’s jealous of Max’s family. She sees the stability they have, which she’s never known. She trusted Shona, so thinking she betrayed her really hurts.’
