Mason’s shocking demise in Coronation Street is set to leave a lasting impact, and Luca Toolan has shared his thoughts on the emotional journey, the significance of the storyline, and what lies ahead for him.

‘When I first heard Mason would die, there was a mixture of emotions,’ Luca revealed. ‘I was sad because it meant leaving, but I was also honoured to be part of such an important storyline. Knife crime is an issue that needs tackling, and I feel privileged to start my professional career on Coronation Street with a story like this. I’ve had such a great time.’

Luca had plenty of time to prepare for Mason’s exit, having found out early in the year. ‘I knew around February or March, so it was a long time coming. It gave me the chance to do a lot of research into the storyline, which was great.’

Discussing the importance of tackling real-world issues, Luca reflected, ‘I underestimated how much Coronation Street can affect viewers. When I was part of the bullying storyline, I saw how it resonated with people. If this story makes even one person drop a knife, then it’s done its job.’

‘It’s pretty cool knowing characters you’ve looked up to will mourn Mason,’ Luca said. ‘At first, Mason was so secluded, but now he’s found his place on the street. It’s a nice feeling to know he’ll leave an impact.’

Filming the dramatic stabbing scenes was a challenge Luca embraced. ‘It was exhausting but amazing. As an actor, these are the storylines you crave. The crew were so supportive, creating an environment where I could focus and put myself in that emotional headspace. I woke up every day buzzing to go to work, even in the cold!’

Fans have recently seen a softer side to Mason, which Luca is glad viewers got to witness. ‘It would’ve been a shame for him to leave with the same attitude he arrived with. Showing his warmth, especially with Betsy, made him feel more human and adds weight to his death and the message about knife crime’s impact on everyone.’

As for his final scene, it wasn’t the dramatic moment you’d expect. ‘It was a small speaking scene with Tim about sticky toffee pudding! It didn’t feel like a last scene at all. I remember wanting to go to Nando’s with Liam for my final meal at Corrie, but he wasn’t replying to my messages. Then Kate Brooks surprised me with Liam and Sydney—it was such a lovely moment.’

Luca’s favourite Corrie memory takes him back to his first day. ‘I had a non-speaking scene with Liam and Charlie. Stepping on that set for the first time is a feeling I’ll never forget.’

And while Luca didn’t take Mason’s iconic maroon bag, he’s tempted to go back for it. ‘I don’t think I’ve done a single scene without it!’

Coronation Street continues on Wednesday at 8pm on ITV1 as Abi struggles to deal with what she witnessed, and hearing a news report of the stabbing, thinks it is about Seb.
