Coronation Street fans are in for a twist as it’s revealed Gary Windass (Mikey North) hasn’t simply vanished, he’s been in a coma, fighting for his life at Weatherfield General.
Up until these scenes, Gary had seemingly left the cobbles to stay with his mum following tension with Lou and her campaign of blackmail. But when Gary failed to return for Liam’s birthday, alarm bells began to ring for Maria, who quickly grew worried.

In Friday’s episode (June 27), which airs on ITV1 at 8pm, the heartbreaking truth comes to light that Gary is lying unconscious in a hospital bed, and his loved ones have no idea.
Maria’s panic intensifies as she reports Gary missing to Kit. During her visit to the station, she learns of an unidentified male patient currently in a coma, but Kit is quick to dismiss any connection. However, viewers will soon discover that Gary is, in fact, the patient and a plot has been set in motion to conceal his identity.
In a shocking twist, someone has gone to extreme lengths to keep Gary’s condition secret, such as using a false name and even posing as his next of kin. As the truth slowly unravels, questions mount over who attacked Gary and why they are so desperate to keep him hidden.
Speaking about the storyline, Samia Longchambon, who plays Maria, said: “Maria and Gary are going through a bit of a rough patch at the moment, and initially, she’s upset that he’s left but doesn’t think too much into it. As soon as Gary misses Liam’s birthday, she has a gut feeling that something isn’t right and fears something awful might have happened to him. Maria’s mind is spiraling, but she doesn’t stop for a second to think about who actually attacked Gary; she’s aware he has a lot of enemies from over the years who could have potentially wanted to take revenge on him.”
