The much loved Scottish soap, set in Shieldinch, has been running for over 21 years now and despite not being aired nationally it’s got a loyal fanbase and remains popular among viewers, recently winning Best Drama at the RTS Scotland 2023 awards.
However the soap is set for a shake-up, starting in October, River City will air as three distinct series each year, with six weeks in between.

Episodes currently airing will finish on August 9th with a cliffhanger that leaves a life in the balance following a showdown that goes horribly wrong.
The show will then take a 10 week break before returning on October 23 in the new format.
Each new series will air for 11 weeks with episodes continuing to premier each Monday via BBC Iplayer.

‘This new format allows the production team the chance to delve deeper in to storylines and create more ‘must-see’ moments, which River City has become renowned for, said Gavin Smith, commissioning executive at BBC Scotland. ‘When the series returns in October, Montego Street will have had a mini makeover and we’ll be introducing the first of three new characters so there will be lots for River City fans to look forward to in the autumn.’
River City continues tonight at 10pm on BBC Scotland
