Emmerdale’s Sam Hall has shared the reasons behind his character Samson Dingle’s decision to reveal the truth about the stabbing at The Hide, clearing Matty Barton’s name in the process.
In dramatic scenes set to air next week on ITV, Samson is urged by his step-mum Lydia to come clean, prompting him to change his statement to the police.
Sam explained that Samson’s “own conscience” plays a significant role in his change of heart. “There’s multiple stages of pressure and the pressure will build and, of course, that would have an effect and potentially guide his own conscience to tell the truth in the end,” he said.
“But I do think that, deep down, his morals are correct. So I think in the end, he himself thinks, ‘This isn’t the right thing to do. We need to do what’s right here.’ I do think it’s him.”
Hall acknowledged that Samson’s previous storylines have shown him easily influenced by others, often saying the wrong things due to fear or uncertainty. However, he emphasized that Samson always strives to “reverse what wrong he’s done” eventually, a value instilled in him by his father Sam and stepmother Lydia.

Addressing why Samson allowed Matty to remain in prison for so long, Hall revealed that the teen was manipulated and threatened by Josh, who coerced him into silence. “I think he was threatened because Josh had mentioned that he had family behind him who weren’t to be messed with. And I think he felt very threatened and pressured by Josh not to say anything,” Hall shared.
“Josh was lying to him saying, ‘If we tell the truth, we’ll both go to prison,’ and that constant voice in his ear made him scared and fear the consequences of saying what the actual truth was. I think it just stopped him from admitting the truth from the offset because he was so scared of going to prison himself.”
As the pressure mounts, fans will finally see Samson doing the right thing and clearing Matty’s name, a move that will undoubtedly have significant repercussions in the village.
