Mason Radcliffe is back on the Cobbles, and actor Luca Toolan is thrilled to dive into his character’s complex story once again.

“It’s beautiful to be back,” Luca Toolan shared. “It was quite a long break, about three months. It was fun at first, but after a couple of weeks, my head started to go a bit crazy. Being back and digging into a storyline that’s crucial for Mason’s backstory is really nice to do.”

Mason’s return to Weatherfield is filled with mixed emotions. “Mason has had a rough time in the young offenders’ institution, so he’s glad to be out, but the amount of jip he’s getting from the residents will be tough to handle,” Toolan explained. “I do think he’s coming with good intentions and wants to start afresh, but I definitely don’t think people will be willing to forget what he’s done… cough cough Gary.”

This week promises an explosive face-to-face between Mason and Dylan. “There’s a lot of pent-up anger between them. Mason probably resents Dylan and blames him for being put behind bars. The initial scene will be quite an explosive one to watch, and it was really fun to film.”

As for making amends, Mason’s approach will depend on how others react to him. “With Dylan specifically, it depends on his reaction towards Mason. Deep down, Mason wants to keep a little bit of the door open for him. As for everyone else, Mason is just trying to do right after a tough time in jail and a rough life so far.”

This week, viewers will see Stu find a bloody and battered Mason near the precinct. “I don’t think he’s already gotten into trouble since being released. This abuse is something Mason has faced his whole life, shaping him into who he is today. As we explore his backstory, we’ll get a clearer insight into his family life.”

Stu might become a pivotal figure in Mason’s life. “Stu has been there, done that, and knows what that life is like. He could be a strong father figure for Mason, something he’s never properly experienced. Stu sees kids like Mason and will want to help him turn his life around.”

Reflecting on Mason’s potential for change, Luca believes in the power of a supportive environment. “Anyone can change with the right support. One person, like Stu, giving unconditional love could change him. Mason is a volatile character, so who knows… But the future is promising if he’s in the right environment.”

As for the future, Toolan hopes to delve deeper into Mason’s backstory. “Mason isn’t going to come out of jail as an angel. I want to build a three-dimensional character. Mason is a damaged human being who will continue to test and improve me as an actor.”

These scenes air from Monday 22nd July 2024
