S4C shone brightly at tonight’s BAFTA Cymru Awards, claiming several prestigious wins in the children’s, drama, and factual categories. With a staggering 20 nominations, the Welsh-language broadcaster proved its dominance in the industry, scooping up multiple honours.
The star-studded event, hosted by Owain Wyn Evans, took place at ICC Wales in Newport on Sunday, 20 October 2024. The ceremony was a celebration of the best in Welsh film and television, showcasing the immense talent across the nation.
Annes Elwy took home the award for Best Actress for her powerful portrayal of prison warden Elin James in Bariau (Rondo Media). The gripping drama captivated audiences and critics alike, cementing its place as one of the standout shows of the year.

In the children’s category, Sêr Steilio (Yeti Television) claimed victory, while Gerwyn Lloyd won for his production design on the drama Pren ar y Bryn (Fiction Factory). James Spinks was recognised for his hair and makeup work on the film Y Sŵn (Swnllyd), and the Best Factual Series award went to Y Frwydr: Stori Anabledd (Cardiff Productions).

S4C’s interim chief executive, Sioned Wiliam, expressed her pride at the broadcaster’s achievements: “What S4C has shown in recent years has been exceptional, and I’m delighted with our content. The fact that BAFTA has recognised a number of S4C programmes is testament to all the hard work of the production companies, the amazing talent we have in the Welsh language, our partners, and all S4C staff.”
She added, “I would like to congratulate everyone who has worked on a very wide and wonderful cross-section of programmes, and warmly congratulate those who were fortunate enough to win at tonight’s ceremony as well as those who were nominated.”
Another highlight of the evening was the presentation of the prestigious Sian Phillips Award to actor Mark Lewis Jones. The award honours a Welsh individual who has made a significant contribution to film and television. Jones, a familiar face in S4C productions like Dal y Mellt, Keeping Faith / Un Bore Mercher, and Y Sŵn, was recognised for his outstanding career in the industry.
