Samia Longchambon opens up about her character Maria’s emotional journey on Coronation Street this year and reflects on her 24 years on the show.
Maria’s year has been a turbulent one, dealing with the aftermath of her son Liam’s bullying ordeal. “It’s been a massive rollercoaster of emotions for her,” Samia shares. “She’s gone through the shock, anger, sadness, and then distress after learning what he was thinking of doing. I think she’s feeling a bit shattered by it all.”
The emotional strain has taken a toll on Maria’s mental health. “It’s had a massive impact. She’s had obsessive thoughts and won’t leave Liam alone for a second. Her work has taken a backseat, and so has her relationship,” says Samia, highlighting Maria’s struggles.
Maria’s obsessive use of hidden cameras has also led to suspicions about Gary’s relationship with Sarah. “She’s never been happy about their friendship, and this has just given her something else to worry about. She’s massively insecure,” Samia admits.
Despite the challenges, Samia remains hopeful for Maria and Gary’s future. “They’ve built a strong relationship over the years, and if they get through this, they’ll come out stronger. But it’s whether they’ll be able to get through it or not.”

Reflecting on her long tenure on the show, Samia is both nostalgic and grateful. “It’s crazy to say 24 years. I mean, I still feel 24! I’ve had some amazing storylines and made lifelong friendships. Jane [Danson], Ali [King], and Tina [O’Brien] are some of my best mates, and we’ve been through so much together.”
The stability and friendships have been invaluable to her. “When I look back, I don’t regret staying this long. The friendships make it so special, and it’s really lovely because you don’t often get that in our industry.”
For Samia, working on “Corrie” is a perfect balance. “I love that I get to act all year round and come home to my family at night. It’s a massive draw for me as an actress and a mum.”
Playing Maria as a mother has been particularly rewarding. “I can relate to Maria massively being a mum myself. This storyline has been hugely relatable, and it’s nice to play stories that feel real, especially when they’re so well written.”
