Toyah learns Leanne has been involved in a nasty accident (Picture: ITV)

Georgia Taylor, who plays Toyah Battersby on Coronation Street, delves into Toyah’s growing concerns over her sister Leanne’s involvement with the Institute and the enigmatic Rowan. “She’s hugely worried,” Taylor says, noting Toyah’s strong instincts about the situation. “The change in Leanne’s behaviour and personality have verified Toyah’s fears. Leanne’s becoming emotionally disconnected from both Toyah and Nick, which is very out of character.”

The tight-knit Battersby sisters are feeling the strain. Taylor reveals, “Leanne pushing Toyah and Nick away is potentially damaging both relationships.” This crisis might even see Toyah and Nick forming an unexpected alliance. “They’ve found something in common here. They both love Leanne and feel like they’re losing her. That’s inadvertently pushing Toyah and Nick together to take Rowan on.”

Toyah’s personal struggles are compounded by her sister’s absence. “Leanne’s always been her biggest ally and support. Toyah is really struggling not having that as she navigates her own trauma,” Taylor explains.

Reflecting on her long tenure on the show, Taylor appreciates the depth it brings to her character. “The beauty of being in a soap is the rich history we can draw upon. Toyah’s fertility journey and her choices, some ill-advised, have shaped who she is. It’s brilliant storytelling.”

Despite the on-screen drama, Taylor cherishes both the conflicts and the closeness with her on-screen sister, played by Jane Danson. “We love both but don’t want too much of either! Jane is my best friend, and we’ve never argued in real life, which adds to our chemistry. Whether we’re at war or supporting each other, those scenes are a joy.”

Taylor also reflects on how Corrie has shaped her personal life. “I joined the show on a five-month contract. The fact that it has shaped so much of my life is extraordinary. Meeting Charlie, being reunited with Jane, and being back near my family, I feel incredibly lucky.”

As she celebrates her 27th year on Coronation Street, Taylor expresses her gratitude. “It’s extraordinary. I started when I was 17, and I’m now 44. To be the caretaker of your own character is rare. Toyah is a huge part of my life.”

Coronation Street continues tomorrow at 8pm airing on ITV1.
