Abigail decides against taking Richie to lunch. Levi asks what’s on her mind, but she deflects. Levi doesn’t have time to dig further as he’s on his way to a meeting with Amelia where he tells her he’s missed his optimal time window for his hand surgery because of applying to be a donor for Eden, therefore his surgeon won’t operate. He asks her if she knows any other hand surgeons?
If he can’t get his hand back to 100% for surgery, then he’d at least like it in best shape possible for his return to the ED. Amelia agrees, then queries whether this means she could be out of a job soon? This leaves them in an awkward place as Levi thought she was suited to the locum position, but she admits to warming to the Bay.
Levi catches Abigail up on him and Mackenzie’s decision not to try for IVF again. He asks Abigail to keep this news a secret; he doesn’t want to burden Eden with everything going on. Abigail explains that she too is withholding news from Eden… Levi urges her to open up to him. Abigail tells her about Richie; Levi is shocked but ultimately empowers her to ignore the noise, only she knows what’s best for her. Abigail packs up her stuff and decides to move back home, then she calls Richie and tells him she wants to meet…
Cash has been reading on the aplastic anaemia forums all night, when Eden wakes up and quizzes him, but Cash covers. Later, Cash reads a positive story about a patient who didn’t find a stem-cell donor but is still alive three years later and relays the story to Eden who’s frustrated he’s doing research about her condition behind her back. He is clutching at straws looking for false hope. Cash defends himself – he’s allowed to have a glimmer of hope and get some support from people who are going through similar circumstances.
Maybe there’s something that this woman he’s found on the forum knows that can help them. Eden shuts him down immediately – Levi walks in at that moment and senses the tension between them. Cash goes to Salt for a drink to give Eden some space after their argument. He runs into Amelia, and they talk about the fight. He explains that Eden is intent on facing the reality that she doesn’t have much hope. Amelia explains that everyone has different coping mechanisms:
Eden’s is to stick to the practicalities, Cash’s is to hold on to hope, no one way is better than the other. Meanwhile at the house, the Fowler siblings talk about the different perspectives, and Levi doesn’t blame Cash for looking for some hope, which softens Eden. Cash returns home, and Levi and Abigail leave to offer them space to talk. Cash explains to Eden (reflecting Amelia’s lesson), that he has needs too, and holding on to some hope is the only way he’s able to get through this.
Marilyn arrives late for her shift at the Diner and tells Leah she’s not up for working today. Leah offers to take the day off too, to support Marilyn. Marilyn eventually agrees. During lunch, the subject of Zane comes up, and Marilyn makes it clear that she’s still blaming herself for Zane’s actions. Leah tries to comfort her, but Marilyn is resigned to stop living with such an open heart because it only leads to heart break.
She leaves the lunch and Alf follows her out, comforting her – one bad result doesn’t cancel out all the good she’s done. He reminds Marilyn how he helped Jett – she shouldn’t stop seeing the good in people, it’s why they love her. Marilyn is buoyed by his pep talk and they go grab a cuppa together.
