A shocking event leaves Carol trembling and terrified, especially as Robert’s behaviour grows increasingly erratic and menacing. Robert is totally unaware of Carol’s discovery and fear, preparing breakfast and dismissing Carol’s questions about Joan, his missing wife. Carol’s suspicions seem confirmed when Robert’s answers become evasive and violent as the dementia tightens its grip on him.
Meanwhile, Kaden and her husband, police officer Dan, are expecting a baby and are house-hunting, but Kaden is leading a life he simply can’t afford and is struggling to deal with financial stress. He pushes forward with plans to oust Robert from his home while Sally, dreaming of a life with her lover, Patrick, engineers a way to get closer to him by offering her services as babysitter to his unwitting wife, Anna.
Moira, Carol’s mother, is oblivious to the horror lurking at Stable Row until Carol confides in her. Moira’s reaction is pragmatic, she worries about the family’s reputation and urges caution, fearing the consequences if the truth is revealed.
Unable to keep her discovery from Robert, Carol confronts him and he breaks down, apparently laying the blame at the door of his brother Neil who ran off with Joan. Robert begs Carol not to go to police officer Dan, leaving Carol in a moral quandary.
The situation escalates when Kaden, motivated by his own grievances, anonymously reports Carol for elder abuse, triggering a police and social services intervention. Robert, confused and frightened, barricades himself in the bedroom and threatens to jump from the balcony.
Carol ends up isolated, the family is fractured, and the mystery of Neil Barrie’s whereabouts unresolved, but a bundle of postcards are posted through the door, which may hold a helpful clue to Neil’s whereabouts.
