The scandal quickly engulfs the community and the police begin building what appears to be a straightforward murder case. For Dan, the investigation seems closer than ever to resolution, offering the possibility of a future beyond Allentown. Yet his personal life is increasingly unstable as the planned adoption of Martha’s baby is thrown into jeopardy by Kaden’s recent behaviour, forcing Dan to confront difficult truths about the man he loves.
Refusing to believe her mother is capable of murder, Carol steps up her own investigation. Connecting the forensic description of the murder weapon to the missing pinecone-shaped newel post cap from Joan’s banister, Carol feels she is close to finding actual evidence of Joan’s part in the murder. At the same time, the police make a major breakthrough by identifying Number 7’s cellar as the true crime scene. But Carol’s own investigation leads her towards something far more disturbing than murder.
Convinced she has solved the mystery, Carol confronts Kaden with her theory that Joan killed Neil after discovering his abuse of Sally. Instead, the conversation unlocks Kaden’s own buried memories of the night Neil disappeared.
